The text makes a critical account of the main patterns of Costa Rican foreign policy. To this end, a contextualization of this is carried out with the main transformations in the international political system and the internal political system. Also, beyond examining specific administrations, the study is aimed at establishing a tentative periodization, consisting of three periods: 1850-1940, 1940-1970 and 1970-1990.
